The Pat Mangini Garden at Pershing Field

The Pershing Field Garden Friends are delighted to extend a heartfelt invitation to the community to celebrate the life and environmental stewardship of a dear friend and community member with the official dedication of The Pat Mangini Garden on June 9th, 2018. Pat was instrumental in planting and maintaining the gardens in Pershing Field Park for years and he has been sorely missed since his death in 2013. The outpouring of admiration for Pat at a memorial in the park inspired his family to make a generous donation to the Pershing Field Garden Friends in his name for the continued beautification of the park. A portion of this donation was used to create The Pat Mangini Garden.

Tim Keating, principle of Earthbilt Landscapes, designed the garden site. Other than the plants that Pat had rescued, and were left in place in his honor, the design used only plants native to eastern North America and incorporated native stones salvaged from a local development site, to echo Jersey City’s original natural ecosystems. The native plants will provide more food to native butterflies and bees, greater resilience in the face of the changing climate and be lower maintenance that the lawn that they are replacing. In fact, the garden is expected to achieve zero runoff, even in the heaviest downpours and will serve as a great model for landscaping in other parks, residences and commercial developments. Many volunteers contributed to the installation of this beautiful space that has already been enjoyed by many in the community and promises to delight for years to come.

Enjoy light refreshments and the birds and bees at the native garden while honoring Pat’s legacy and the enhancement of the passive areas of Pershing Field. Join us and find out more about volunteering to help us continue to enhance Pershing Field Park.
